In the summer of 2017, HWUHC and Watsonians Hockey Club signed a new partnership agreement. Watsonians will offer Heriot-Watt students the opportunity to play Saturday league matches at both National and Regional level, as well as the various club training sessions throughout the week.
The Mens 1st XI are currently coached by ex Scotland player Michael Leonard, and secured promotion back to National 1 for 2018/19. On the Ladies side, the 1st XI are now an established National 1 team, and in 2017/18 reached the top 4 for the first time, and competed in the European playoffs. The rest of the teams at the club cover a wide range of abilities, from the Mens 2s fighting at the top of Central 1, to the Colts, who bring together younger school players and the more casual members.
Watsonians HC is part of the wider, multi-sport Watsonians Club, and train & play home games at Tipperlin, George Watson’s College, which is located in Bruntsfield. The club have recently added a new ladies team, bringing the total number of squads up to 10 (5 mens & 5 ladies). Watsonians also have their own clubhouse, Myreside, which is a short walk from the hockey pitch. Myreside is used by all Watsonians teams and is always lively on Saturday evenings, with 2 bars, caterers, and an impressive balcony area overlooking the city.
Watsonians will be offering discounted membership rates for HWUHC students, in addition to Heriot-Watt Sports Union absorbing the cost of the individual Scottish Hockey registration fee (£35 per player).
If you are interested in joining Watsonians, please feel free to speak to anyone on committee who will point you in the right direction, or alternatively, contact Watsonians directly.
